Our History

February 2009

It has been almost six years since I first saw her picture. I will never forget the impact of that moment – it was as if her eyes were looking at me through the picture, pleading for help. She was only seven years old at the time, and appeared so hopeless. She was sitting on a hammock in the middle of the tiny, muddy, dilapidated shack - the place she used to call home. She had recently lost her mother. She had only two changes of clothes in her possession. And at that young age she was responsible for all of the cooking, cleaning, and laundry for herself, father, and two brothers.

Her situation was not unheard of. We have all seen many pictures and images of situations like these on television, or through other types of media.

But this time it was different.

My husband met Priya and her family during his trip to Guyana. When he came home, he showed me her picture and told me her story. My heart was wrenched! At that moment I was awakened to the reality of hopelessness. I thought to myself, if Priya did not receive help, what would happen to her? I was compelled to act upon my convictions. I couldn’t imagine a world without hope.

That is where we began.

Several kind-hearted individuals came alongside our endeavour, and shared in our burden to bring hope to Priya. Since then, many others have come along side this organization to bring hope to other Guyanese families in need. We have built many homes since our beginning with Priya. With you, our friends and partners, we will continue to bring hope to those who are hopeless, and change their tomorrow’s forever.
